In depth study of the cognitive and social aspects of communication as well as the psychological, neurologic, linguistic, and cultural correlates of adult communication disorders associated with dementia, agnosia, non-dominant hemisphere injury, and traumatic brain injury. The student will analyze, synthesize, and evaluate research on the nature, prevention, assessment and intervention of cognitive communication disorders in adults. The student will learn the characteristics, underlying pathology, evaluation, and treatment of communication disorders associated with acquired cognitive impairment including dementia and traumatic brain injury. ![]() The one-year certificate provides the introductory and foundational knowledge in speech, language, and hearing needed to apply to a master’s program and pursue the entry-level education required to practice in the field. We also offer a 100% online, 21-credit Certificate in Speech and Hearing Foundations for students who want to pursue a rewarding career in speech-language pathology but do not have the prerequisite coursework to apply to a graduate program. The speech pathology certificate bridge program provides levelling courses that equip you with the knowledge you need to be successful in the Master’s program when you are ready. Students without a speech pathology undergraduate degree can take our certificate bridge program. Completing Calvin’s Master of Speech-Language Pathology program will give you the academic and clinical hours you need to sit for the national PRAXIS exam and begin your clinical fellowship in speech-language pathology. However, students may have to travel and even be prepared to stay in other places depending on nearby placement site availability. You may be able to fulfill some of the required clinical hours at your current place of employment, or our program’s faculty will try to place you in a clinical site near your current location. Coursework in our program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) and features evidence-based perspectives to treatment. You’ll prepare for a speech-language pathology career by analyzing language, neurological, physical, speech-sound, and voice disorders. Additional immunization and other requirements may be mandated by the external clinical sites.Calvin University’s online master’s degree in speech-language pathology program includes 21 courses. Students must provide up-to-date proof of compliance with the University of Utah Health immunization requirements for health care workers.Prior to beginning externships, students must complete a minimum of 150 clock hours in the department clinics and receive approval of Clinic Director.Externships are completed during the second spring semester (fifth and final semester) of the graduate program.Specific externship sites may have additional time requirements.Minimum requirements for each of the two required externships are:.Most students complete their second externship in an inpatient or outpatient medical facility. The second externship may be completed in a setting of student’s choice based on clinical areas of interest and clinical training needs.All students are required to complete one of their externships in a public or private school setting.Two externships are required (more may be completed if desired).Students must provide proof of compliance with the University of Utah Health immunization requirements for health care workers.Unavailability to meet with clients at necessary times may necessitate scheduling clinic in additional semesters and may delay one’s externships and graduation.Clinic schedules are determined by the Clinic Director, according to client needs.Clients are typically scheduled between 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on Mondays through Fridays.The clinic is not closed during fall break and spring break and student clinicians are expected to see their clients during those times. ![]() The clinic operates from the first to last day of each semester, including finals week.
